[Each page in this illustrated book describes the meaning of a different Talis card. A message has been penned down on the title page:]

My dearest Quelenna,

While you were sleeping, I did another Talis reading. I half expected to draw the fool, because that is what I feel like, and what is your venture if not reckless? Instead, I drew these:

The Ten of Waves - meaning divine love, bliss, or illusions
The Comet - meaning riches found, or fulfilled wishes
Death - meaning new beginnings

The suit of Waves resembles love, and I know what we have is still frail, but... can you blame my heart for beating faster when I saw these cards? I've been staring at them for an hour, and I need to go (the cups aren't going to clean themselves), but I know that when I come back home tonight, you will be gone.

But when you return, will you tell me if you feel the same, or if this was all just a blissful illusion?

I love you,
Alys

Extraordinary happenings. While meditating in the forest, Nettie and I were ambushed by a pack of goblins, led by a drow. We had no choice but to defend ourselves.
But that is not the extraordinary - or rather disturbing - part. On the drow's death, a parasitic creature emerged from the corpse and attempted to escape. I managed to capture it, and have the host's cadaver here in my study. I've told no one of my fears. Nettie suspects, but knows better than to ask.
I will investigate further before informing the others. Kagha will demand answers I don't yet have. I had better record any further findings in a separate volume and keep them upon my person, lest prying eyes jump to the wrong conclusions.

Citizen Remira,
We received your application with interest, and noted your experience in the field with great enthusiasm. However, your letter's repeated reference to 'pay' and 'bounty' indicate motivations perhaps at odds with those of the Finest.
We are sure you would make a fine addition to any adventuring guild, and wish you luck in finding one more compatible with your own particular priorities.

[A comprehensive and practical guide to the craft of stage magic called Tarbell's Guide to Distractions. Creased pages indicate a much-read excerpt entitled 'Making Money with Magic'.]
The wise magician knows never to perform for free. Too many already rush to call our craft cheap or second-rate, and point to archwizards as true masters of the arcane. Indeed, should any of those fine personages ever descend from their lofty towers to catch a show, they too think to lecture humble practitioners on matters of the Art.
The wise magician nods, smiles, and gently reminds such luminaries that true magic does not derive from staffs, grimoires, or very fine hats, but from hard work and persistence to the craft.
This ought to inspire a response of such animated and gesticulated proportion that your assistant will have ample time to rifle through overburdened pockets. Thus the wise magician demonstrates the importance of a good distraction, and the archwizard learns a valuable lesson in humility.

[Though originally a screed on Lolth penned in blood, this book's crimson script has been smeared away in several places, a different hand writing atop it:]

I recall my life upon the surface with more than regret. I weep for the decades spent treading the murky waters of profanity while my true Queen waited in the shadows. Even my name, 'Eliette', feels foreign and foul upon my tongue.

...

A high elf exalted by Lolth herself - my drow captors cannot fathom it. But I see their house's downfall in visions granted by the Spider Queen herself. When that day comes, when some unnamed whelp from an insignificant house cuts the matron mother's throat, I will escape. I will find solitude, and I will worship Lolth with my very soul.

They can sense my devotion. It draws them. I hear them in the shadows, whispers from the dark mother.

...

I woke to a gift wrapped in spider's silk: a pair of boots, taken from a heretic's corpse. Lolth sends her daughters to reward my faith, to let me know I am on the right path.

...

Another gift: the corpse of a drow, sigils scarred upon his face. An arachnomancer - one with the power to inhabit the spider's form. It is a message, a calling. My blood already dries upon the dagger, her blessed image carved into my skin.

It is time. I will forever transcend this blasphemous flesh and refashion myself in the Queen's image. No longer will I be bound to this lowly form, this base shape of organ and bone. Even the arachnomancers of Menzoberranzan shall weep at my feet, their little spells so feeble and fleeting.

Today, I found the house of Lolth, and I shall be its Matriarch.

3 Uktar, 1371 DR

Let it be known that I left my homeland because I was bound to my master, and not because I chose to. Were it not for the oath I swore, I would still be home, serving the zulkirs, and not tending to hog pox in this crude hamlet. However, an oath is an oath, and I will serve him, as is my duty, until I am released.

[The early journal entries are written in a delicate, intricate script that gets rougher and wilder the more pages you turn. It ends with one hastily scrawled entry.]

They did it! The Dark Justiciars got the old bastard before the zulks could. Now he's bleeding out and once he's gone, I'll be free of this oath. I can go back.
I'll return the tome of necromancy he stole. They'll forgive me then. They'll know I'm loyal.

6 Nightal, 1371 DR

I pay no service to the gods, but by some blessing, this village believes me and my apprentice to be simple healers. My tattoos are hidden, my red robes locked away, and my lab secured. I have not heard the word 'Thay' since we arrived and only my apprentice knows me as Ilyn Toth.
This place is not ideal for my research, but I can never return home - not the way I escaped. I'd be put to death, with worse to follow.

The work here is simple and allows me to continue my research at night, but progress is slow. Reanimation seems easy, but restoring life? That prize eludes me. The tome contains the magic I need, but it fights me at every step. As does my apprentice. At least my familiar has made it easy to secure bodies without raising suspicion.

This will take time. Will the zulkirs find me before I can bring her back? I cannot say, but if they do come for me, they'll have to face the guardians I've raised.

A well-thumbed little book filled with cramped handwriting

After more than a century of hard work, false leads, and dashed hopes, the means of saving Moonrise Towers may have just walked into the grove and presented itself to me. Thanks to the effects of the shadow curse, the roads leading to the citadel remain as impassable as ever, but there may be another way. An adventurer band led by a certain Aradin appeared, seeking my help with infiltrating a large goblin nest found in the ruins of the old temple of Selûne. He believes there is a vast network of Sharran passages and strongholds hidden deep under the temple, and that somewhere within these structures there is a rare artefact called the Nightsong.

These newcomers seem like little more than mercenaries, but what they described rings true, and could explain so much - like how Ketheric Thorm managed to raise such a force of Dark Justiciars in utter secrecy, and how they seemed to vanish just as Thorm unleashed the shadow curse upon Moonrise.

It's clear that there is a secret route from the temple of Selûne that weaves through the Underdark, all the way to Moonrise Towers. I have to see for myself - and that means I must join Aradin on his little expedition. One of his lot, a dwarf named Brian, has something in writing that's supposed to guide us to the hidden entrance in Selûne's temple - but finding the way is the least of our worries. The goblins there seem to worship the very same 'Absolute' as the ones who attacked Nettie and me - the same ones who also were in league with a drow infected with an altered illithid parasite.

Worse still, my birds report that even more of these cultists are converging at Moonrise Towers, moving freely with little care for the effects of the curse. In my efforts to vanquish one plague, I may have stumbled upon another - whatever is behind these cultists and the tampered illithid spawn seems to have made its lair in Moonrise, right where the shadow curse is at its strongest.

We will depart soon. I can only hope that our infiltration goes smoothly and we manage to elude these Absolutists - at least until I get to Moonrise Towers and lift the shadow curse. Then perhaps I can stop whatever illithid conspiracy is unfolding in those ruins, and the balance of nature will be restored once again.

May Silvanus guide my path, and lend me all His strength for what is to come.

I says there'll be somethin' rotten inside him soon enough. There's a lot of rancid meat down in the pens and when we cut him open, I'll make sure he stays alive long enough for the maggots to make a nest of him.

Dearest yer excellency and most prettiest Minthara,

You might not remember me. I ain't nobody important after all. Not yet.

I was chasing chickens with the lads when you came to visit boss Ragzlin. You looked right at me when you told him that if we was as good at killin' humans as we was at pluckin' poultry we might be worth a damn. Made me feel proper special to be recognised like that.

Next raid, I'll spill so much blood the Absolute'll have to notice me. Then I'll come to Moonrise and you'll notice me too. I'm the one with the stumpy leg and the gammy eye.

Jarrus—enough foolishness. A new temple with settlers to guide, and you'd rather scrabble in the dark below? We're clerics of Selûne - act like it.

New chapel?! Those materials were meant for the temple proper, not your playground down there. What am I to tell the House of the Moon?
- M

Tell them to start packing! There are caverns down here to dwarf the Inner Cathedral. The builders are almost done, and so we go deeper.

Enough, Initiate! The Underdark is no place for games. Those are novices with you, not Silverstars. Return. Immediately.

Thus the interlocking circles will bring the full moons to match the stars, while casting darkness where it belongs at the bottom. That chasm to the Underdark will stay sealed.

I confess the design is not foolproof to outsiders, but I had to sacrifice complexity for material resilience. I've always wondered why Selûne took me from the Hall of Wonders to serve at this temple as a priestess. Perhaps this was the reason.

This is it. The recipe that made me decide to publish my notes. The story might not interest you, but I shall record it for posterity (feel free to skip to the actual recipe).

I was sitting in the Elfsong, sipping my usual hot cocoa, the heat soothing the pain in my scale-less hands. A small child - human - stumbled through the door, sick as a dog. All the other patrons seemed like they wanted to help, but nobody could pay for an antidote for a stranger's child.

Meanwhile, the ingredients were just lying around, in the kitchen. Every single one of those people could have saved that child, but only I knew how. It felt like a crime.

RECIPE for 1 bottle of Antidote

Extracts needed:
---- Salts of Mugwort
---- Suspension of Bullywug Trumpet

Method:
Slowly trinkle salts into suspension. Stir clockwise until the concoction's consistency turns almost chewable. It might turn slightly green, but this is purely aesthetic and has no effect on the antidote itself.

And remember:
When in doubt with alchemy
Just recall the rule of three
Thrice the same ingredient

Dearest Yrre,

I don't know if you're coming back, if you'll even read this message, but if you do come back, could you wait for me? I'll only be gone a few tendays, but the thought of coming back to this empty tower, with nothing but Bernard to fill these halls... I don't know how much longer I can take this. I miss you. I miss you so much.

I can't shake the thought of how different things might have been if only I'd been less stubborn. Working on your lightning inventions, my magic. Eating together. Laughing at your stupid puns. Waking up next to you. Despite everything, I still love you.

So please, if you read this, can you wait? I'll be back. I won't be long.
Forever yours,
Lenore

[A few sentences are penned below, in a different hand.]

2 Alturiak, 1481 DR

Who would have thought, three years ago, that I would start a diary - not a research journal, but a real diary. I guess when every soul is more like to kill you than converse with you, talking to a book starts making sense. And who would have thought, three years ago, that I would be called back to Baldur's Gate to confer with the other clerics of Mystra, right at the apex of my studies: I have all the pieces, but I have barely started my treatise. No matter. I will take my ring with me, to show them a glimpse of the possibilities. I will leave you, my dear book, here, together with the rest of my research, waiting to be finished. I should be back before next Ches.

Dearest Lenore,
I'm not sure I should say this, but your last letter really worried me. Why in all Hells would you tame a bulette? Just because you found it near Myrna's grave doesn't mean that that's a sign. I'm really worried about you, Lenore. A bulette is not a pet. Using it as a guardian is one thing, but you sound quite taken by it. I know you don't want to come back before you finish your research, but if you are feeling lonely, you know my door is always open.

Lots of love and hugs,
Amarith

PS: It really warms my heart to hear that you put the autumncrocus flowers on Myrna's grave. I remember she liked to roll around in them, even though she'd always sneeze after. She was such a soft, loyal dog. I wish there was more I could do.

THE ANTIMAGIC PROPERTIES OF SUSSUR TREE FLOWERS
By L. De Hurst

For those knowing about sussur trees, their magical properties have always been a topic of debate; not only their ability to create an antimagic aura, which is complete enough that even those unattuned to the Weave can feel its effect, but also - and most interestingly to those living in the World Above - the ways its roots, bark, and flowers can be harnessed to make magic items. Rumours of such items are rare, but spread in settlements bordering the Underdark. Their existence, however, has never been confirmed by any of our clerics, nor by any other reputable scholars. I hypothesised that these items are no mere legends, and indeed, in this treatise I will endeavour to explain how I myself created items that have antimagic properties, and that use the magical absorption of sussur tree flowers as a power source.

[This decaying tome details the scientific and arcane principles behind the great forge's construction. The results of multiple experiments are explained in exhausting detail.]

Hammer Test 2.5.66.8

The forge is functional, but operating at a scant one-third of its full potential. At current fractalisation values, the Hammer can force various iron alloys into moulds, but adamantine remains unmoved and unmarked. Increasing levels of hypo-torque to 6.94. Doubling magma heat values.

Hammer Test 2.6.70.0

Test unsuccessful. So hot was the magma that the adamantine shattered entirely under the force of the Hammer. The properties of super-heated adamantine are intriguing, but I seek to mould it, not to crush it. Maintaining hypo-torque levels. Reducing magma heat values by one-fifth.

[The pages, apparently copied from a master tome, describe the construction and use of a grand forge in the Underdark.]

Among the Sharrans dwelled the gnome Silouv Yali, whose talents for wizardry were known from Candlekeep to Sorcere. Under his tutelage, the Sharrans built the Great Forge, which could heat mithral with such vigour as to turn it to adamantine. With this astonishing metal, they could mould the finest blades and armour.

Yet the jewel of Yali's eye was not the forge itself, but the protector he conjured from the magma to guard it - a construct said to be so mighty that no blade could fell it, and no spell could pierce it.

[Instructions for operating the Great Forge are listed underneath.]

Ingredients: raw mithral ore and a proper mould.
Place the ore and mould into their respective chambers.

Just a few sips of Slow Spout and I was perspiring piss, swear to Laduguer. It was pitch black till the mind flayer came, so real I heard its tentacles writhing. 'Strip!' it commanded, straight in my head, and my hands peeled my rags right off like they had minds of their own. 'Take it!', it said next, and held out a dagger, black with old blood. I watched as my fingers wrapped around the hilt. Then came the final command. 'Carve!'

I cried out and shook my head. 'No, no no!' - and then shot straight up, sticky with sweat and caked in shit. Just a dream, Pist told me, but it didn't feel like one. More like a memory.

Night Two

Kept down a whole mug of it before my head hit the stone. I stood naked and shivering, my right hand gripping that drugning dagger. Couldn't move my legs even a fingerwidth, like they were cast in iron. The mind flayer's claws caressed my face from behind. 'Carve!'

I screamed and shook as my own hand brought the blade to my chest and sliced across it. When my hand removed the blade, the bloody likeness of a mind flayer remained. Woke up in a flash, with Brithvar looming over. Lingering memories of our illithid enslavement, he said, from back when we were dwarf-folk. Then he gave me a good wallop for sucking down ale.

'Drink won't lead no place good', he said. But that shit sure feels good going down.

[The binding of this book is thicker than its combined pages, which are surprisingly devoid of detail.]

We know little of the ones that came before, but we know they worshipped the Lady of Loss. We know they constructed the great fortress, and named... [The next few words are smeared and illegible.] But from whence they came, and why they departed - this is a mystery even to Ketheric Thorm himself.

What we do know is that Shar's Chosen has heard Her call. Just as Grymforge served our Mistress eight-hundred years nigh, so it would again.

Here, Thorm's Dark Justiciars shall rise.

Here, we will fulfil our Goddess' pact.

Here, we will rebuild the lost city of Grymforge.

So far will our shadows spread, and so dark will they be, that Selûne's light may be forever extinguished.

Sybil

My scouts bring me troubling word that Moonhaven yet stands. Have you forgotten the Three Laws? Would you turn your back on Mistress Shar?

Tonight, you will beg Shar's forgiveness. Tomorrow, I depart Moonrise Towers for Grymforge. A tenday hence, I shall march the Dark Justiciars to Moonhaven myself. By the time the first star trembles that night, the Selûnites shall be slain and their allies routed.

Speak your prayer thrice nightly, Sybil: once at nightfall, once at moon's zenith, and once before sunrise. I shall remind you the words, lest you've forgotten: 'Mistress Shar. I have glorified Your name! Master Thorm. I have cried out your Word! I am your servant, forevermore!'

Demonstrate your devotion, and Shar may still know you. Fail, you are naught but dust, unknown and unremembered.

Your Master,

Ketheric Thorm

My whip has finally coaxed some particulars from the captive Harper. To wit: she revealed the location of her stockpile, on a rocky overlook. I investigated, but found the chest in question is trapped. Any attempt to open it might break its contents completely.

Never saw a beast like it. Bloated with muscle, tusks as long as my arms. Scent of charred flesh, but I saw no flames. The stone might have been parchment, so quick did the creature charge through it. The other Justiciars are dead - or close to it.

It wasn't alone. Hellknights, too. Masks bolted to their faces, like plaques to a keep wall.

Day 3:

Trapped. Another rampage, and down the walls came. Started to dig. Not sure...

Day 7:

It's done. May Shar's shadows keep me.

My dear Lindis.

You will never read this letter. In Moonhaven, your eyes shone as bright as Selûne herself. Now, they remain forever closed in this gods-damned abyss.

Curse the Dark Justiciars for destroying all we hold dear. Curse Ketheric Thorm for this torment he inflicts. Curse Shar, for blighting our home, our family, our love.

Death comes soon for my own wasting husk. Perhaps then, Our Lady of Silver may reunite us.

Perhaps then, we might have our rest.

Selûne, O Selûne,

I call you from darkness, but you are silent. I pray for your light, but there is only shadow.

Death encircles me: the traps taunt me, my belly screams for nourishment. Can you not hear my pleas? Has my faith been for nothing? Have my good works gone unseen?

Selûne, O Selûne, WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME?

[The tiny, ink-smudged scrawl in this notebook is squeezed in so little space as to nearly be illegible.]

... truly fascinating. My observations on the myconids mirror what I discovered while researching mind flayer telepathy, despite only one being transmittable (the spores). Both of these are of biological origin, in contrast to the telepathic bond ritual.

How does innate telepathy impact the structures of the brain? And beyond that, how does the presence of another's mind within one's own affect the body? What may seem like mere thoughts and images could cause extremes of fear or pleasure if they are embedded deep enough in the recipients' psyche. If such an experience leaves behind a permanent memory, is that part of your mind still truly your own?

Whatever the answer, I must harvest - gently acquire - more of the myconid spores in order to continue this research.

A battered journal, its pages largely blank.
Content:

It always felt vainglorious, to think my deeds worthy of a personal journal. But as I watch the drow mass outside our gate, I realise my arrogance is already of a far costlier sort. I see no harm in tipping the scales a little further.
Not for me, but for those who followed me down into the dark. They deserve to be remembered.

- Initiate Norn Remys, lost in the deep tunnels as we fell back from the drow.

- Initiate Thulk of the Northern Wastes, grazed by an arrow and succumbed to poison.

- Initiate Bree Brekka, who stood against a drider with only her mason's hammer.

And Initiates they are, the entire company - for they have seen and suffered too much to be called novices.

————

We've collapsed the tunnel behind, and have made ready to open the gate. Perhaps we can carve a path through.

And if not, I enclose a list of names - let the annals show that whatever their end, the cause was the same: one High Initiate Jarrus wished to stamp his name in the history of his Church. He sought to forge a path through the darkness, not realising there are some places the light was never meant to touch.

He was a fool.

I can't sleep without the moon and stars. As a child, I prayed to them before I ever knew Selûne's name. Is that blasphemy?
When I walk the battlements, the only light I see is the glow of their eyes. Out there, waiting.

I know the High Initiate is making a plan. He'll get us out of this.

-------
We're making a stand.

Moonmaiden fair, lend us your light,
To guide us home in dark of night,
To keep us on the path of right,
Ever burning, ever-

[The last line of the prayer succumbs to blurring, as if stained by something wet.]

Log 124.
Signs of life near the outpost. Intelligent. Clearly trying to hide.

Log 125.
Still can't find the mysterious shapes. They know how to cover their tracks. Possibly drow.

Log 129.
Led them south. Rumours of a spectator there. Let the Underdark solve its own problems.

Log 130.
No sightings.

Log 131.

Log 132.
Mynthe saw statues down south, shaped like drow. Spectators shouldn't do that. Either way, that's one less problem to worry about.
